Sainsbury’s has introduced the UK’s first till-free store in London at The Holborn Circus’ Local outlet. Shoppers can scan a QR code and pay for products using the company’s app on their phone. They will receive a receipt for their purchase via email. Shoppers who prefer to pay by cash or can continue to do so through a one-man helpdesk at the store.
Depending on customer feedback and how it speeds up shopping, the supermarket giant will roll out the digital system, called SmartShop, across the country. Trials are already underway at eight Sainsbury Local outlets in the UK. It has been experimenting with the technology since August 2018 and said that 82% of in-store transactions were already done digitally.
Clodagh Moriarty, group chief digital officer at Sainsbury’s, said, “Our customers value their time and many want to shop as quickly as possible – technology is key to that. This is an experiment rather than a new format for us. It hasn’t been done in the UK before and we’re really excited to understand how our customers respond to the app experience.”
